Best Family Photography Locations in Washington, DC
If you’re planning family photos in Washington, DC, choosing the right location can make all the difference.
The good news? You don’t have to choose between a beautiful backdrop and a location where your kids can actually be themselves.
As a Washington, DC family photographer, I love helping families choose locations that fit their personalities, their children, and the type of photographs they want to create.
Here are some of my favorite places for family photography in Washington, DC.
1. Georgetown Waterfront
Georgetown Waterfront is a beautiful choice for families who want a mix of city, water, architecture, and natural scenery.
There are plenty of opportunities for walking, sitting, exploring, and letting kids move around rather than standing in one spot.
It’s especially beautiful during golden hour when the light becomes soft and warm.
2. National Mall
For families who want classic Washington, DC photographs, the National Mall is hard to beat.
The monuments and historic architecture create timeless photographs that will always remind you of this season of your family’s life.
The wide-open spaces can also work well for families with children who don't love sitting still.
3. Meridian Hill Park
Meridian Hill Park is one of my favorite options for families who want something a little less traditional.
The greenery, paths, architecture, and beautiful fountain provide plenty of variety without needing to travel between multiple locations.
It can be especially beautiful for families looking for a more relaxed and natural feel.
4. Rock Creek Park
If your family feels most comfortable surrounded by trees and nature, Rock Creek Park can be a wonderful choice.
The natural setting creates photographs that feel less like a formal portrait session and more like a family adventure.
And sometimes that's exactly what we want.
5. Capitol Hill
Capitol Hill offers beautiful architecture, charming streets, greenery, and plenty of personality.
It's a great choice for families who love the look of Washington, DC but want something a little more neighborhood-focused.
6. Yards Park
For families with young children, Yards Park can be a fun option because there is room to move, explore, and play.
That can be especially helpful when you're photographing toddlers who aren't interested in standing still for photographs.
And that's okay.
Your children don't have to sit perfectly and smile at the camera for us to create beautiful photographs.
7. The Wharf
The Wharf offers waterfront views, architecture, and a distinctly modern DC feel.
It's a great option for families who want something different from the traditional monuments and historic locations.
How Do We Choose the Right Location?
The best location isn't necessarily the most famous one.
When helping families choose a location, I consider:
Your children's ages and personalities
The overall look you want
Time of day
Season
How much walking your family is comfortable with
Whether your children need room to move
The type of clothing you're planning to wear
Whether you prefer nature, architecture, or a combination
The goal is to choose a location where your family feels comfortable.
Your Family Doesn't Have to Be Perfect
One of the most common things parents tell me before a session is:
"I'm worried my kids won't cooperate."
Don't worry.
Kids wiggle. They run. They laugh. They get distracted. They need snacks. Sometimes they need a break.
That's normal.
My approach to family photography is relaxed and playful. I'll guide you when needed while giving your family space to interact naturally.
Some of my favorite photographs happen in the moments between the poses.
